Key Lamp Performance Factors Beyond Shape and Size
While shape and size determine physical compatibility and light distribution, several additional characteristics influence how a lamp performs in real-world use. These factors help define the visual quality, efficiency, and suitability of a light source for a particular environment.
Color rendering describes how accurately a light source reveals colors compared to natural daylight. This property is measured using the Color Rendering Index, or CRI, on a scale from zero to one hundred. A higher CRI indicates more natural color appearance. Incandescent lighting and daylight both achieve a CRI of one hundred, representing excellent color fidelity.
Color temperature defines whether a light appears warm or cool and is measured in Kelvins. Lower color temperatures produce a warmer, golden tone, while higher color temperatures create a cooler, bluish appearance. This characteristic affects the atmosphere of a space and is often selected based on function and preference.
Efficacy measures how efficiently a lamp converts electrical power into visible light. It is calculated by dividing the light output in lumens by the power input in watts, resulting in a value expressed as lumens per watt. Higher efficacy indicates greater energy efficiency and lower power consumption for the same level of brightness.
Together, color rendering, color temperature, and efficacy complement shape and size considerations, allowing users to select lamps that meet both functional and visual requirements without exceeding fixture limitations.
