Understanding Light Bulb Shapes and What They Are Designed to Do
Modern lighting offers a wide range of bulb shapes, each developed to meet a specific lighting purpose. The diversity in shapes exists because lighting requirements vary significantly between applications such as residential rooms, decorative fixtures, commercial spaces, outdoor environments, and focused task lighting. A bulb’s shape directly affects how light is distributed, whether it spreads evenly, projects forward, or serves a purely decorative role.
Light bulb shapes are identified by a letter that precedes a size number. This letter describes the physical form of the lamp. Common examples include A for Arbitrary, B for Bulbous or Torpedo, C for Christmas or Candelabra, G for Globe, R for Reflector, PAR for Parabolic Reflector, MR for Mini Reflector, and T for Tubular. These shape codes are printed on the bulb or its packaging and are used universally across lighting technologies, including incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, and LED lamps.
General-purpose lighting most often uses A-series lamps, which maintain the classic pear-shaped profile developed in the nineteenth century. Decorative lighting commonly relies on B, C, CA, E, and F series lamps, which resemble candle flames or feature elliptical contours. Globe-shaped G-series lamps are frequently selected for vanity and ornamental fixtures, while reflector-style lamps such as R, BR, MR, and PAR are engineered to direct light forward for focused illumination.
Tubular lamps, identified by the T series, are primarily used in linear fluorescent fixtures and are common in offices, commercial spaces, and utility lighting. Each shape exists to balance light distribution, fixture compatibility, and visual appearance, making shape selection a critical part of choosing the correct lamp.
