UV‑C refers to short‑wave germicidal ultraviolet, with wavelengths ranging from 200‑275 nm. It has the weakest penetrating power and cannot pass through most clear glass or plastics. Solar UV‑C is almost entirely absorbed by the ozone layer before it reaches ground level.
Natural UV‑C barely reaches the ground, so it has negligible effect on human skin in the natural environment. However, artificial UV‑C poses substantial hazards to the human body and direct exposure must be avoided. Short‑term direct irradiation can burn skin; long‑term or high‑intensity exposure may result in skin cancer.
